Commentary
"The courthouse and jail are two separate buildings linked by a bridge over the intervening street. In both, the masonry is exploited for maximum expressive effect; some of the individual blocks in the prison wall weigh more than five tons. The courthouse is a large rectangular block with a central light court; externally the great bulk of the building is divided into component elements revealing the organization of the courts and chambers at the principal floors. Because of the significant public function of the building, more attention is given to the details carrying the massive round arches and the dormers of the corner pavilions. Particularly impressive is the tall tower. Yet despite the building's size and many elements, everything works together for the benefit of the whole and no part becomes discordant."
