[edit] Firm Bio
architrave p.c., architects is a woman-owned architecture firm located in the Capitol Hill Historic District in Washington, DC. Established in 1976, it is a full-service firm experienced in a range of building types, including institutional, commercial, residential, and synagogues. Since we were awarded our first term contract with GSA in 1982, we have specialized in term contracts with various agencies, including GSA, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Park Service, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Department of the Navy, the Department of the Interior, and the District of Columbia Office of Property Management.
We are well respected for our expertise in Historic Preservation and have shepherded many projects through the federal Section 106 process, including NCPC and CFA review. Much of our work in landmark structures involves the forensic analysis of problems, then designing and detailing solutions sensitive to the historic fabric of the building. On a community level, members of the firm are active in the Historic District Committee of the Capitol Hill Restoration Society, and a firm principal, Judith Capen, is author of several of the award-winning Capitol Hill Preservation Guidelines (http://www.chrs.org/Pages/6_Pubs1.html) and writes an architectural advice column for the Hill Rag newspaper (http://www.capitalcommunitynews.com/publications/hillrag/2008_February/134-135_RAG_0208.pdf).
architrave has long been committed to the good stewardship of the Earth and we are delighted to have designed the Reeves Building demonstration green roof project. Our portfolio includes two passive solar houses in addition to energy efficient office buildings and synagogues. Two of our registered architects are LEED Accredited Professionals. Another has taught environmental control systems and energy efficiency courses at two local universities.
Historic Preservation often goes hand-in-hand with sustainability. As historic preservation architects we have long been involved in the adaptive reuse of structures, basic to both sustainable site selection and materials and resources. In our detailing, we are cognizant of features that enhance the maintenance of the structure.
Our office on Capitol Hill is located two blocks from the Eastern Market metro stop, allowing us to travel to most projects and meetings using public transportation.
