FCJZ was established in 1993.
[edit] Firm Statement
"The meaning of the Chinese phase Feichang Jianzhu could vary from unusual architecture to very architectural. In the context of Korean and Japanese, it could suggest an urgent architecture. As a possible definition of the Beijing based architectural practice, none of the readings is truly accurate although none too far off.
"...In the context of the current economic boom in China, the office argues for participation, takes immediate actions, at the same time exercises self-restraints and focuses on a basic yet researched architecture in order to maintain a critical position under the pressure of tremendous size, quantity and speed. The work of FCJZ usually makes departure from the essential issues of building, such as program, site, space, material and construction and, from such a foundation, ventures into the concerns of city, landscape, tradition, and culture. The studio in fact outputs from private houses to governmental institutions, from urban proposals to exhibition installations, with occasional experimentations in furniture and graphics. For FCJZ, the word architecture is more a verb; it describes the process of achieving a product but not necessarily the product itself. In past six years, the office has 'architectured' more than one hundred and ten times.
"China, its society and culture, is presently undergoing a great transitional period. Therefore, the opportunities offered to architects are not only to build but also to contribute to the shaping of a contemporary China, that is the ultimate challenge for FCJZ and other Chinese practices alike."
