The building design fully embraces its site by capturing dramatic views to the south of the Catoctin Mountains through continuous glass walls in the main reading room and children’s area. With regional exterior stone cladding and interior exposed wood construction, the one-level, 10,000 square foot library fits naturally into its setting within a new community park near the historic town of Boonsboro. The airy main reading room offers calming vistas, but also the warmth of the stone fireplace flanked by soft seating. The expanse of glass in the children’s room is juxtaposed with a lower height window and a projecting dormer alcove with a window seat.
The flexible one-level building design was programmed to meet current and future library needs. There is a special place for children and a central “living room” for adults. The airy main reading room offers calming vistas, but also the warmth of the stone fireplace flanked by comfortable seating. The expanse of glass in the children’s room is juxtaposed with a lower height window and a projecting dormer alcove with a window seat. The finish and furniture selections were made by the architecture firm to provide visual texture. As functional as it is beautiful, the building includes ample staff work areas and a community meeting room seating 50 that can be utilized independently of the library.
The building design features numerous sustainable design features and is LEED certification eligible. A high-efficiency, zoned heating and cooling system, direct/indirect lighting fixtures, recycled materials such as insulation, flooring and architectural woodwork, double-pane low-e windows, motion-activated restroom lighting, low maintenance waterless urinals and timed exterior lighting were incorporated into the overall library design.
