The Robert Brewton House is the earliest example of the Charleston Single House. It was built sometime between 1715 and 1730. Quoins are stucco and were decorative, plastered over the brick construction. The corbel bricks at the roof line are similar to Harvard Hall but has the addition of an ogee moulding beneath. The interior demonstrates early Georgian on the third floor and the rear rooms on the first and second floor are later Georgian (1770). The first and second floor front rooms were later modified into the American Federal (Adams) style. Decorative material was not changed out, only elaborated upon as each modificaton occurred. With the house designed in the English 17th C. style but with interior "modernizatons," the house represents each period of interior design from the time of constructon until the 19th C.
