Building Details
Client University of Alabama at Birmingham
Cost $21.3-million
Area 152,275 square feet ( square meters)

"Designed to serve as a hub for the university's urban campus, this new building houses weight rooms and cardio-fitness areas; a four-court, wood-floored gymnasium designed primarily for basketball and volleyball; a synthetic-floored gymnasium for indoor soccer, badminton, and special events; and a swimming facility with both leisure and lap components and an adjacent patio area. An indoor track passes through every major activity area, and a climbing wall is housed in a prominent tower. The building also offers an outdoor-pursuits rental center; five racquetball courts (a movable wall lets one be used for squash); four fitness studios; a game room; a child-care area; a juice bar; a meeting room; and various areas that support recreational activity. Large expanses of glass, most of them facing north, bring daylight into the building without admitting too much heat. " — Chronicle of Higher Education
