From Archiplanet
Working mainly in 1948, architect Joseph Esherick designed a series of alpine vacation homes on Lake Tahoe for San Franciscan families. Esherick's designs draw upon imagery from swiss chalets and nordic lodges, as well as on the work of early-modern California architects such as Greene and Greene and Bernard Maybeck. At the same time, Esherick's distinctive, individual Bay-Area style also ties the projects to his later work, such as the Hedgerow Houses and the Cary House.
The 1948 houses were built in the southwest region of Lake Tahoe, in an area overlooking Emerald Bay, which came to be known as the "Gold Coast", and which was favored by San Franciscan home owners.
A later house, on the north shore of the lake, the 1955 Buck House stands somewhat apart from the others. With complex roof forms, the Buck House seems to show evidence of having been influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright in the US Southwest region.
