Lighthouses have been erected and maintained as aids to coastal navigation for thousands of years. One of the original seven wonders of the ancient world was a lighthouse!

As a beacon on the shore, a landmark, usually tall, built to withstand ferocious weather, tended historically by a special breed, there are many reasons the lighthouse is a storied and beloved type of building.

Do you have a photo of a lighthouse near you? Add it to Archiplanet!
