[edit] Discussion

“…its reinforced concrete structure was simultaneously daring and conservative; daring in its unprecedented span of 225 feet and conservative in that the extraordinary structure was largely masked on the exterior by the stepped tiers of its clerestory fenestration. Berg’s invention, with the engineer Trauer, of a radial ribbed dome, spanning onto a tension ring-beam which in turn transmitted its weight to a series of four great arches, may be taken as a step in the gradual realization of de Baudot’s vision of a vast reticulated space.”

—Kenneth Frampton and Yukio Futagawa. Modern Architecture 1851-1945. p182.
