"Built for the university's Pratt School of Engineering, the Center for Interdisciplinary Engineering is a four-building complex with teaching and research areas intended to bring together faculty members studying biology, photonics, materials, and integrated sensors. Among other features are a nanofabrication facility and a six-sided room for virtual-reality projections. Women's restrooms in the complex feature a tile pattern that re-creates a breast-cancer gene, while the pattern in men's restrooms recreates a protein that controls the formation of cartilage. The complex is Duke's first LEED-certified research facility. A landscaped pedestrian corridor links the complex to the historic core of the universitys west academic campus.
