[edit] Discussion
WRT worked with the Delaware Department of Transportation, the Riverfront Development Corporation, and several public agencies to develop a vision and design guidelines for the Christina Waterfront area in Wilmington, Delaware. In a subsequent phase of work, WRT has codified part of that vision in the South Walnut Street area Urban Renewal Plan Amendment.
Objectives were developed to promote environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable practices in the ongoing development of South Wilmington. The goals of the project included encouraging measures to reduce the impact of flooding through stormwater management that will be tied to a park and open space network to provide public benefit for area residents and visitors.
The development of a dense, mixed-use neighborhood will result in a number of other public benefits for surrounding neighborhoods. These benefits may include expanded retail offerings and civic infrastructure such as schools and community centers, increased open space, an increased tax base for the city of Wilmington and more activity, contributing to safety in South Wilmington.
