Commentary
"The Coonley residence provides the first example in Wright's work of the zoned plan. Living quarters are raised, in typical Prairie fashion, and a pavilion links various spaces. Inlaid tiles form a geometrical pattern in the frieze on the plaster-surfaced, wood-trimmed house. Published plans...include the cottage and coach house, originally a stable, so their design date might also be set at 1907, but construction was well after the 1909 completion of the main residential structure. The entire project has been somewhat altered, the residence being converted into three separate apartments. The coach house and contiguous sunken gardens are now a separate plot."

The Creator's Words
"In breadth, length, height and weight, these buildings belonged to the prairie just as the human being himself belonged to it with his gift of speed. The term 'streamlined' as my own expression was then and there born. As a result, the new buildings were rational: low, swift, and clean, and were studiously adapted to machine methods."
