"Yale University’s David S. Ingalls Rink, informally known as the “Yale Whale” because of its signature humpbacked roof and arching 300-foot backbone, is one of the most visually arresting modern buildings of our time. Designed by influential modern architect Eero Saarinen (1910–61; Yale `34), the Rink was designed in 1956 and opened in 1958.
"The innovative Ingalls Rink, which is said to evoke the grace and speed of ice skating, is one of Saarinen’s best-known structures. Along with Louis Kahn’s celebrated buildings for the Yale University Art Gallery, constructed three years earlier and recently restored, and the Yale Center for British Art, completed in 1974; Paul Rudolph’s Art & Architecture building, of 1963, also recently restored (and renamed Paul Rudolph Hall); Gordon Bunshaft’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, of 1963; and Philip Johnson’s Kline Science Complex, of 1963–65, Ingalls Rink established the Yale campus as one of the nation’s richest sites for modern architecture.

"Saarinen’s sculptural masterpiece is deceptively simple in appearance. Although the ice rink itself is a standard rectangle with rounded corners, it is housed in an elliptical building. Moreover, the architect took a radical turn in creating the roof, conceiving a graceful concrete arch that forms the axial spine of the building. Roof-support cables are suspended laterally from this spine, extending to the perimeter wall of the building, where they are attached to a horizontal compression beam at the top of the wall. A curved plaster ceiling is suspended above the upper seating area and circulation ramps of the vast, column-free interior.
"Ingalls Rink, which seats 3,486 spectators, is located near the heart of the Yale Campus, on the corner of Prospect and Sachem Streets. The Rink has been the backdrop to sports dramas and real-life ones, perhaps most notable among the latter being a series of tense public meetings during the Black Panther trial of spring 1970. "In early October 2009, Yale completed a multi-million dollar renovation and restoration of Ingalls Rink, undertaken in order to address the effects of weather and environment on the building and to fulfill a pressing need for modern training facilities. Under the direction of the architectural firm of Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates—the successor firm to Eero Saarinen and Associates—the work has yielded dramatic improvements, all with minimum visual disturbance of Saarinen’s masterpiece.

"Highlights of the refurbishment include the removal of two previously added layers of ice slab and installation of a new ice slab at proper elevation; recycling and upgrading of the dasher boards with heights corrected for sight lines; installation of low maintenance, energy- efficient light fixtures; refinishing of the original wooden benches, with corner seating added for improved sight-lines; the refurbishment or replacement of the Rink’s exterior wood doors and the use of new Low-E insulating curtainwall glass; and the addition of new, larger press- boxes providing exceptional sight lines, among other improvements.
"A 12,700 square-foot underground addition houses new locker rooms for Yale varsity hockey teams and visitors who use the rink, new office space, a student-athlete study area, new training rooms, and special changing rooms for community skating programs.
