ARCHITECTURE
We engage in a collaborative design process with our clients to achieve specialized and inspired designs. Rigorous design requires an in depth understanding of the many challenges, unique to each project, while creating a cohesive and simple solution. At DA+UD, we LEAD the process of design by LISTENING.
Innovative building technologies and design techniques are being utilized by our firm, from researching new, green materials and finishes to pursuing cutting edge panelized building methods. We utilize the latest design tools available, including Revit (Building Modeling software) and other physical and digital models to help our clients visualize the final result, thereby reducing surprises and achieving more successful results. These strategies, in conjunction with the faculties of our talented and experienced designers, work to create designs that are buildable and beautiful.
URBAN DESIGN
Urban space is only as successful as it is well used and loved by its occupants. Well designed public spaces can improve a community by creating more spontaneous and harmonious interactions between people. DA+UD strives to make public spaces sustainable to improve the health, vitality and environment of city life. We recognize that the organization and infrastructure between buildings is sometimes just as important to balance as the design of the building itself.
Our commitment to excellence in urban design is reflected in our interest in a multi-disciplinary approach to cities as an ecological system. Understanding the need to holistically integrate storm water, transportation options, energy concerns, housing variety and a sense of community and vibrancy is our goal for all cities and their suburbs. In this effort, we have experience organizing community charrettes to build awareness and create buy in from stakeholders who are working toward envisioning what the greener cities of tomorrow will look like.
INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE
Our approach to building design extends to the carefully crafted details of the interior spaces. As famously stated by Mies Van Der Rohe, “god is in the details”. We thrive on working with fabricators and contractors to seamlessly integrate furniture, lighting and architecture.
SUSTAINABILITY CONSULTANTS
DA+UD offers consulting services for municipalities, companies and organizations looking to optimize the sustainability of their existing or new facility. We have experience working with communities, building consensus and facilitating group Eco-Charrettes, a process by which stake-holders and the design team work together on intensive brain storming sessions in order to more efficiently establish project goals and open channels of communication. Energy efficiency, indoor air quality, land use, and material stewardship, to name a few issues central to “green” design, are reviewed and prioritized with considerations for Life Cycle Assessment.
FURNITURE AND EXHIBITION DESIGN
DA+UD is interested in exploring the latest production techniques and how standard building materials can be made transcendent through good design. Recently, we designed a shelf out of plywood carved with a CNC machine, which was inspired by the wood cutting methods of Chuck Close, that can be flat packed and assembled with relative ease. We also work to create interactive and informative visual experiences that question the expected.

Our people have over 35 years of combined experience, much of that spent in the renowned architectural office of Cesar Pelli (now Pelli Clarke Pelli) and BNIM. We have worked on projects throughout the country yet remain committed to and excited about the continued growth and success of the metropolitan area of Kansas City.
DA + UD have been fortunate to work with some of the finest technical and artistic consultants in the country. We continue to benefit from these local and national connections and this collective expertise has provided us with the capacity to assemble a design team of the highest caliber. This enables us to successfully design and manage even the most complex building types.
We believe that the most successful projects are a result of an open dialogue between client and designer. Good communication allows for the exchange of ideas and the establishment of clear expectations. We also believe that design problems offer the potential for design solutions.
