The new home for this internationally acclaimed museum of science and perception, situated midway between Ferry Plaza and Fisherman’s Wharf, will bring to life a dormant stretch of the San Francisco waterfront. The museum will move from its windowless, relatively inaccessible location at the Palace of Fine Arts to a bustling downtown location in the midst of the urban and built environments that give the Bay Area its defining character. The building utilizes the original pier building’s natural daylighting and draws in cool water from the bay below for radiant cooling. Photovoltaic panels on the roof are then sized to generate all the remaining energy the building will require, making it one of the largest net zero energy buildings. Visitors will experience the full length of the 800-foot building, within which freestanding pavilions create discrete exhibition spaces.
