Building Renovation 2002-2006

Building Modification (2002-September 2006)
Gerding Theater
Designer GBD Architects, Portland, Oregon, USA
Date 2002 to September 2006
Modification Type Renovation, Adaptation
Building Type Theater
Construction System Stone, Brick, steel

During this renovation, the original stone and brick masonry walls were stripped of paint, exposing building's original, natural material palette. Aside from exterior walls and roof, the building - which had long been used as a secure car park was - was almost completely gutted. The renovation created some 55,000 square feet of program space within a 20,000 square foot building footprint with below-grade and mezzanine spaces.

This building is one of several adaptive reuse projects completed by GBD Architects in a five-block redevelopment project encompassing the former Blitz-Weinhard Brewery site, also known as the Portland Brewery Blocks. The development site includes five contiguous blocks on the south edge of Portland's Pearl District.
