Stories 1

Flynn Primary School, Preschool, Health Centre and grounds is a landmark (1971-1973) design of award-winning Australian architect Enrico Taglietti.

Flynn Primary School represents Taglietti’s first expression of open-plan design as a creative response to an emerging philosophy of education, based around co-operative team-teaching, flexible use of space and cultivation of a stimulating and exciting learning environment. Prior to the opening of the school, the National Capital Development Commission showcased Flynn as Canberra’s first fully open-plan school

It is the first design by Canberra’s multi-award winning architect, Enrico Taglietti, to realise the emerging educational philosophy of the 1970s. As such, Flynn was showcased by the National Capital Development Commission and studied by University of Canberra Architecture students.

The Flynn school complex is the genesis of Taglietti’s open-plan school design, which was further developed in Giralang Primary School. Together the two reveal the evolution of open-plan design, in contrast to the traditional classrooms and layout in Taglietti’s first school design Latham Primary School.

Flynn is one of relatively few examples of public buildings in Canberra designed in the Late-Twentieth Century Organic Style that remain in an undisturbed setting (a key feature of that style) and one of a smaller number designed by Enrico Taglietti.

The Flynn complex is also understood to be the first ACT school to use poured concrete to form its uniquely angled walls. This and the innovative use of space, shape, form, texture, aspect, light and environmental juxtaposition make Flynn a fine example of Taglietti’s trademark Late-Twentieth Century Organic Style.
