[edit] Freedom and Unity Memorial
Freedom and Unity Memorial was designed by Explicit Architecture for the city of Berlin as a competition entry. The cavities within the building are to be understood as impressions of fragments of the past – the pieces themselves disappeared. Some few remains lie scattered as time witnesses as a visible part of a collective memory. In the monument itself, they leave behind free and empty spaces. The monument itself, its cohesive masses symbolize materialised strength of peaceful revolution. It is a network which is all permeant and self-sustaining. The materiality of this memorial is translucent or even transparent.
[edit] The Competition
There were 532 competition entries of which officially none was said to be matching the high standards. The socioeconomic damage was estimated at 20 mio eur.
