[edit] Discussion
Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an Austrian artist whose building designs have been built in the United States, Austria, and New Zealand, though he was primarily an artist and not an architect, per se.
[edit] Comparison with Antoni Gaudi
Hundertwasser's architectural work has been compared with that of Antoni Gaudi because it eschews straight lines and uses tile extensively. And while the comparison is a superficially apt one, Hundertwasser's architectural works - though both evocative and unusual - lacked the formal and structural sophistication of Gaudi's designs. Here, Hundertwasser's buildings depart company with Gaudi, veering into surrealism, though differing from conventional orthagonal building forms by degrees at best, and in some cases not at all.
This notable failure to achieve mature expression in three dimensions is, perhaps the result of Hundertwasser's background as artist working primarily in two-dimensional media.
