"Designed to accommodate multidisciplinary research at the molecular level, this new addition to the university's science quadrangle houses medical-research labs; biochemistry and molecular-biology labs; physical-science labs for cryogenics, optics, and laser-based research; and synthetic chemistry and chemical biology labs. A transparent block contains offices and meeting rooms, while lounges and meeting spaces are dispersed throughout the building to promote gathering and informal discussion. The chilled-water plant at one end of the complex is integrated with the overall design, sharing its transparency and its materials -- chiefly limestone, metal, and glass.
