The Harley-Davidson Motor Company built the original Product Development Center to house research and development laboratories as well as administrative, engineering and design space. The fast-growing motorcycle manufacturer selected the team of ACS, Flad, and GAS to expand the PDC to support increased production goals. Having used elements of sustainable design in the original PDC, ACS suggested pursuing a design that met the USGBC’s LEED Certification. The expansion included a LEED Certified office space accomplished within budget that was established prior to the implementation of LEED into the design.

The office expansion sits on a virtually undeveloped site and provides an environment that connects people to the outdoors through the views to the natural environment. A limited building footprint allowed for the preservation of native wetlands, eliminating the need for site irrigation. Materials used in the building process were locally supplied, and incorporated recycled content where appropriate. A construction waste management plan was implemented and 76.4 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills.

The sustainable features of this facility resulted in reduced energy consumption savings of $30,00 per year. Recycling and reusing during construction saved more than $10,000. The LEED 2.1 certified facility is 25% more energy efficient than required by code.
