"The new library for the university's rare books and special collections hides most of its bulk below ground -- including 12 miles' worth of shelving for 300,000 rare books, 12 million documents, and more. It also houses a 200-seat auditorium, a reading room, seminar rooms, studies for visiting scholars, and galleries. The building is located adjacent to both the main library complex and to the earliest part of the campus -- what Thomas Jefferson referred to as his "academical village."
