Commentary

"In the planning, a slight swerve off axis allows Lutyens to arrange both the main room to the southeast and the staircase hall facing southwest so that each aligns with large but simply planned lawns. Desiring axiality overall and in the major rooms has the consequence that minor rooms and service corridors become contorted and awkward. It is no accident that corridors at Homewood exist only in the servant's quarter...of the plan, while the owners and their guests promenade from room to room. There is evidence that Lutyens was conscious of this, as the section at Homewood shows."
