Built in the building formerly used as secret police headquarters during both the Nazi and Communist regimes in Hungary, the House of Terror is a museum and memorial to the victims of both regimes of terror.
The building's 2002 modification includes a deep metal soffit with the word "Terror" cut out of its surface. The effect is that in direct sunlight, the play of light and shadow through the soffit displays the word "Terror" on the building's upper facade.
The communist star and the Arrow Cross logo of the occupying Nazi affiliate group are also cut into the soffit.
