[edit] Discussion
Conceived as the centerpiece to a late 1970s civic revitalization plan, the 120,000-square foot (11,149-square meter) Hult Center for Performing Arts features one 2,500-seat theater and one 500-seat theater as well as smaller event and meeting spaces. Balancing the need for acoustic isolation against noisy city streets to the north and south, the building is wrapped on three sides by an imposing, multi-story concrete wall.
Only at the eastern facade is the building's scale reduced through a series of stepping gable roof forms, which recall the nearby Cascade mountain range. This canopy shelters the exterior entry transition areas, including a large interior hall. In contrast to the solidity of the surrounding concrete, these elements are comparatively light and warm thanks to extensive glass walls and glue-laminated wood structural elements.
An adjacent 270-room hotel and conference center, together with two multi-story parking structures were also constructed as part of the urban renewal master plan.
