Constructed in 1904 by the Ilium Realty Company, the 5 story Ilium Building was designed by the important Troy architectural firm of M. F. Cummings & Son. Notable for its fine architectural detailing and large size, the structure is a landmark in downtown Troy and occupies an important corner in the business district. The Ilium Building, along with Boardman, Frear, and National Sate Bank buildings, was erected during a building boom in downtown Troy during the first decade of the twentieth century. The exterior of the building has been preserved in its original form.
