Measure Pay-back on Green Building Technologies
LHB uses a tool called Performance Metrics™ to look at a building's consumption of energy, water, and other resources and compare that data to regional benchmarks. The assessment calculates an "energy use intensity" or EUI that predicts an eco-friendly building's actual energy consumption.
"In order to improve," says LHB Senior Vice President Rick Carter, "we need to understand the implicit impacts of the buildings we have designed." Such post-occupancy evaluations are rare - and potentially risky. What if a building was not performing as LHB had intended? The firm is currently taking that risk by assessing 74 of its own buildings constructed between 1996 and the present.
