"Located in the university's health-sciences complex, this new building has research labs, support space, offices, and a vivarium housing research animals. A five-story atrium, visible to pedestrians passing outside, serves as the building's circulation hub and offers opportunities for informal meetings. Because of ventilation needs, the lab areas have a greater floor-to-floor height than office spaces. To avoid wasting space, the architects arranged the building so that five office floors fill the same volume as four lab floors; staircases and elevators with two sets of doors mediate between office and lab areas.
