Commentary
"It is a rectangular building, wider than deep and measuring approximately 17 m x 11 m (55 ft x 36 ft). Internally, there were shallow square-backed recesses for the books or scrolls at three levels and narrow galleries carried on closely spaced columns for access to them. A further feature was that the walls containing these recesses were not the outer walls. There were other walls separated by a narrow ambulatory to accommodate the stairs to the galleries and to give added protectionalmost an early example of cavity construction. The façade was embellished with two storeys of columned aedicules, pairs of columns carrying alternately curved and triangular pediments in the top storey."
