[edit] Project Description
Rapidly rising enrollment at Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School (LREI) had created a need for a more efficient use of space and better facilities. This new building, located at the Bleecker Street campus of LREI, houses learning spaces for students grade K-8. It occupies a small parcel of land abutted by existing school facilities on two sides and by an apartment building to the south. 1100 designed a new library, two classrooms, two art studios and a new cafeteria for the school. The structure integrates the vastly disparate floor levels of the two conjoining school facilities, easing circulation and flow throughout the school. A new entrance to the Middle Division of the school on Sixth Avenue strengthens the dialogue between the school and the community, while the interior still fosters an intimate learning environment. Within two years of completion, a second phase to the project was completed containing a new science laboratory, and a gymnasium and multi-purpose space for the Lower School.
