"As part of a multiyear effort to restore the original appearance of the three-story atrium in its landmark 1891 Main Building, designed by the noted Wilson Brothers firm, the university has installed a reproduction of the original 1891 chandelier. While the brass and bronze original weighed as much as 1,500 pounds, the aluminum reproduction weighs just under 600. Nevertheless, the steelwork in the attic above the atrium's glass ceiling was reinforced. An electric motor allows the chandelier to be lowered when bulbs must be replaced. Thirty-six hand-bent radial arms that are nearly 18 feet tall flare to a diameter of nearly ten feet. A lower tier of 14 arms cascades underneath for a total of 50 lamps and globes. Spun, cast, and laser-cut appliqus were produced to resemble the originals as closely as possible. " — Chronicle of Higher Education
