For an interesting series of stories about a former Mansfield Training School resident, "Ramblin' Rich" Miller, who left his mark on the Mansfield community before passing away in 2008, go to this link [1] There are additional stories with comments about what life at Mansfield Training School was like if you search the archives. Mansfield Training School was an institution for the mentally retarded and disabled that was closed in 1993 during a statewide move to de-institutionalize the disabled and also due to lawsuits over patient treatment brought about by family members. Many of the buildings are now being used by the University of Connecticut, for offices, for the Ballard Institute of Puppetry (BIMP), an arts facility, etc. and these are known as UConn's Depot Campus. Across the road (Route 44) the buildings were converted to what is now a medium-security prison (Bergin Correctional Center) whose population has grown from an original 350 to about 1,000 and is now ringed with razor wire (as of 2008). Some of the remaining buildings on the UConn Depot Campus are in serious disrepair and some have been demolished. However, many of the remaining buildings, including the large white house that was used by the MTS administrators, are still quite striking.
