"This inventive student center, one of the most eagerly awaited buildings of the year, reclaims vacant space between the academic and residential portions of the campus. Constructed beneath an elevated train line that appears to weigh down the roof, the center houses a coffee shop, a food court, a faculty dining room, a ballroom, an auditorium, offices, a game room, a bookstore, and more. It also incorporates a building by the preeminent Modernist Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who designed many IIT buildings while he was the institute's dean of architecture. A $13.6-million metal-clad concrete tube enshrouds elevated-train tracks that run just above the building (<A HREF="/weekly/v50/i16/16a02201.htm">The Chronicle, December 12, 2003</A>).
