The Mcgill Club House was constructed from 1910 till 1915. Construction was begun by the Steptoe Valley Smelting and Mining Co.and finished by Nevada Consolidated Copper Co.. The Club House was built in conjunction with the YMCA Industrial Department, an off shoot of the YMCA Railroad Dept. Originally the building was known as the YMCA Club House (many Y's are still known as Club Houses) and was intended to be a YMCA community center for the town of McGill. The Y's involvement ended in 1919 due to an inability to form a cohesive membership. From 1919 till 1961 the building continued to be a community recreation center sponsored by Nevada Consolidated Copper, later Kennecott Copper Co.with the dormitories on the upper 2 floors used by single men working for the company. The building was sold in 1961 to the Mormon church for $1, on the condition that they donate their existing church to the McGill youth recreation group. The LDS church sold the Club House in 1984 to a man whose only vision for the building was a casino/brothel. He gutted the building and by 1990 it was abandoned. Efforts are currently under way to restore the building to its original appearance. See www.mcgillclubhouse.com for more photos and history of this building.
