"This building for the Center for Early American Studies was designed to satisfy both the donor's directive that the building express the center's scholarly mission and the university's mandate that new buildings reflect the time of their construction. The building presents a detailed portico to the busy intersection of 34th and Walnut Streets, while a garden facade overlooks a much-used field to the north. The exterior walls are brick laid in the traditional Flemish bond. On the ground floor are a reception room and lecture hall, along with offices and support spaces. The second floor, reached via either twin open stairs or an elevator, houses the library and the offices of the McNeil fellows. " — Chronicle of Higher Education
