"Built to hold optics labs and offices, this addition to an existing structure is clear in its expression of its function, and it incorporates materials and methods used in the study of light/optics throughout. Light-sensitive research functions are organized along the windowless southern side of the building, while office and support spaces open to natural light and mountain views to the north. The building, constructed of cast-in-place concrete, is sheathed in copper panels that recall the color of the brick used elsewhere on the campus, while lending the building's mass a lightness that brick would not allow.
