[edit] Discussion

A noted British architect, most well-known for his association with James Stirling and for designing the Lowry Performing and Visual Arts Centre, at Manchester, England, 1992 to 2000. Wilford started his professional career in 1960, joining the practice of James Stirling and James Gowan. Later, Wilford became an associate partner to Stirling's in the mid-1960s.

Eventually, the two entered into partnership under the firm name James Stirling Michael Wilford & Associates. This incarnation of the firm completed projects from 1971 to around June 1992, when Stirling died. It was during the end of this time that the Lowry Performing and Visual Arts Centre project was started.

In late 1992, the firm Michael Wilford & Partners was formed. Wilford practiced under this name until around 2001. From 2000 to 2003, Wilford also worked in collaboration with MUMA (McInnes, Usher, McKnight Architects), formed by three former associates in Wilford's firm. From 2001 to present, Wilford's UK-based firm has been called Michael Wilford Architects.

[edit] Germany

Wilford Schupp Architekten, GMBH is the current name of a sister firm whose origins date back to the Stirling/Wilford partnership. Following Stirling's death, the firm was known as Michael Wilford GMBH, with Manuel Schupp acting as the managing director. In 2001, this German firm was given its current name, with Schupp as a full partner.
