Building Details
Client Florida State University
Cost $13-million
Area 89,200 square feet ( square meters)

"This renovation converted a 1929 Collegiate Gothic gymnasium with a 1949 addition into a modern facility for the university's dance department. The main gymnasium space became a 400-seat performance theater, while the space that had held the swimming pool was carefully divided into two levels, housing a black-box recording studio below and a dance studio above (pictured). The main lobby's plasterwork and terrazzo flooring were preserved, as were terra-cotta tiles and a cast-iron baluster on the main stair. Wood-block flooring from the original gym was salvaged and reused in the theater foyer. Also incorporated into the building are control booths, catwalks, green rooms, dressing rooms, showers, practice studios, classrooms, faculty offices, a costume shop, a computer lab, a conditioning facility, and the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography.
