MLTW was established in Berkeley, California in 1962 by Charles Moore, Donlyn Lyndon, Whitaker, and William Turnbull (MLTW). The firm first gained prominence in the profession with the design of the Sea Ranch Condominium in 1964.
MLTW emphasized several major themes within their projects. The firm emphasized the use of elements that suggest the presence of people and which relate to the human body. It also activated spaces by providing a structure that would allow improvised use and which would encourage human interaction. MLTW created active spaces that generated pride of ownership while allowing varied claims of use.
Each individual's contribution to MLTW is difficult to discern due to the cooperative nature of the firm. As independent architects each of the partners has shown distinct abilities, with Moore and Turnbull achieving the most individual success. While Turnbull has matured and expanded on the innovations introduced at Sea Ranch, Moore has shown an innovative brilliance. Lyndon has spent most of his time teaching.
The firm separated in 1970.
