Commentary
"[T]he Morgan Library which cost in excess of $1.2 million, is one of the firm's finest buildings. While McKim was very much the designer of the structure and poured his heart into the details, as a later partner observed, the delicacy of the structure is not typical of him at all....The library was intended as a repository for his finest books, paintings and art objects and as a private office....After the meeting with Morgan in April 1902, McKim produced two designs: the first derived from Palladian villas, and the second, while having its origins certainly in Italian Renaissance garden casinos, was more suitable for an urban strongbox....In spite of the inevitable difficulties between the imperious Morgan and the stubborn McKim, a real affection and respect was evident in their relationship and the final building....The library exists today in excellent condition and is open to the public."
