There is a series of plaques on buildings in this district listing the name and a brief history of each building. The plaques were placed in 1996. The text of some of the plaques appears below.

[edit] North side of West Main Street

[edit] Consolidated Furniture

The Consolidated Furniture building was erected in 1927 by F. C. Jensen who used the building for manufacturing and selling furniture. The building was owned by the original tenant until 1973. (Plaque #5)

[edit] August Lundberg Building

This building was erected in 1889 for August Lundberg who was a dentist. He occupied the upper floor of the west side of the building. The bottom floor housed the Pastime Billiards Hall. It was later occupied by New Resort Saloon and Charlie Holberg's Saloon. On October 15, 1945 Marshall Lon Larson escorted Hyrum BeeBee from this building. BeeBee, who according to some sources was the infamous Sundance Kid shot and killed the Marshall. (Plaque #6)

[edit] Lundberg Block Building

The Lundberg Block Building was erected in 1888 by August Lundberg. The building was originally occupied by Consolidated Wagon and Machine Company and had two large doors in front to allow loaded wagons to enter the building. The original poles that held these doors are still visible from Main Street. (Plaque #7)

[edit] Palace Pharmacy

Constructed in 1899 by A. H. Maiben, this building was originally known as the Palace Pharmacy as noted on the plaque located at the top of the parapet. It later housed a dentist's office, an attorney's office, a hardware store, and a barber shop. This building features wide window arches with rusticated stone and other Classical and Victorian detailing. (Plaque #8)

[edit] Dental Office Building

Erected circa 1899, this building was occupied by a dentist on the second floor and had a grocery store on the first floor. In about 1916, it became the telephone building. (Plaque #9)

[edit] North Sanpete Bank

The North Sanpete Bank building was erected in 1899. It is the only Romanesque style building on Main Street. It was originally occupied by The North Sanpete Bank, with W. O. Copeland as its president. In 1933 it was occupied by the Fairview Bank. (Plaque #10)

[edit] Grocery Store Building

Erected circa 1898 this building originally housed a grocery store on its east side and a barber shop on the west side. Later it housed Weekes Pharmacy. (Plaque #12)

[edit] Equitable Block Building

This building was erected in 1892 and housed the Equitable Co-op store. It was later known as the Progress Building and housed the Progress Mercantile Co. In 1???the Barnette and Larson Drugstore was established in the building. Due to structural weakening caused by fire, the former two story building was remodeled and reduced to a one story building in 1951. (Plaque #13)

[edit] Meat and Produce Company

The Meat and Produce Co. buildings was erected in 1898. It is an elaborate example of Victorian commercial architecture. It originally housed the Meat and Produce Co. Later it was occupied by a printing firm and the Mt. Pleasant Pyramid newspaper. (Plaque #14)

[edit] Confectionary

The Confectionary Building was erected in 1898 as a confectionary, sporting a sign that read "We sell Colville sweet cream Ice Cream." It has an unusual metal cornice on the front of the building. (Plaque #15)

[edit] Step Gable Building

Erected circa 1898 this building is a modest example of Victorian architecture with an unusual step gable facade. Historically, it housed a barber shop, a cafe called Eatingers, and Overman Mattress and Furniture Company. (Plaque #16)

[edit] Seely-Hinckley Building

This building was erected by John H. Seely and Robert Hinckley in 1919. It occupies what was historically known as the "old Peel corner." The building was originally occupied by stores, a car showroom, and a garage with the capacity to hold 88 cars, and a fire station at the rear of the building. (Plaque #17)

[edit] Beauman Gas Station

This building was erected in 19?? by Thelma Beauman. It was used as a gas station and later ??? as a doctor's office. ????E. Speakman practiced in this building from 19?? until 1989. (Plaque #29)

[edit] The Liberal Hall

The Mount Pleasant "Liberal" Club was an organization whose members were usually former Mormons. They built this hall in 1875 as a meeting place and social center. It was here that the Presbyterian minister and educator, the Reverend Dr. Duncan J McMillan began his missionary work in central Utah and, on April 19, 1875, opened a free school that eventually became the Wasatch Academy. (Utah Historic Site Plaque N-258-1)

[edit] Telephone Office

This building was erected in 1937 by Ray Bohne. It was built for the telephone company to use as an office. In 19?? Ray and Valene Johanson bought the building for a floral and gift business. In 1963 they added the east side and rear of the building. (Plaque #31)

[edit] Ericksen Grocery

Erected in 1893 and opened under the name of Ericksen Meat and Grocery, this building was owned by Henry Ericksen, his brother Alif, and Judge Ferdinand Ericksen. Ferdinand Ericksen was a lawyer and occupied three rooms on the second floor for his law practice. The town doctor, Dr. W. W. Woodring, occupied the other two rooms on the second fllor. The building remained in posession of the Ericksen family until 1976. (Plaque #32)

[edit] Fairview Bank

This building was erected in 1938. It served as the Fairview Bank, the Sanpete Valley Bank, and then First Security Bank until 1972, when it was sold and became the North Sanpete School District Office. (Plaque #33)

[edit] M. E. Nelson Building

This building was erected in 1937 by M. E. Nelson. It was originally used as an auto show room and garage. It was later sold to Justus O. Seely and was occupied by Franz 5 cent-$1 on the east side and Safeway on the west side. In 1975, the building was sold to Terrel M Seely, who used the entire structure as a grocery store.
