[edit] Discussion

“Located in the downtown area of a city that was on the verge of high-rise development, this project called for a clinic and a residence in separate buildings...that was protected from outside views....The solution was two completely unrelated internal systems—the primary structure (determined by the lighting method), and the layout for furniture, storage spaces, and domestic artifacts—which were designed separately and simply put together. Discontinuities and skewed elements appear throughout, perhaps most distinctly in the relationship between the clerestories and the placement of equipment, and pointing out these disjunctions is one of the main design themes. ...The design was severely criticized by many observers at the time because it so completely cut off its surroundings; but it was a particular response to a very special program and was not intended as a general solution.”</p>
