The designer of Calvary Episcopal Church ("Old Stone Church") in Buffalo, North Dakota was architect George Hancock (1849-1924). An immigrant from England in 1882, Hancock was an Anglican and became involved in a series of early Episcopal churches in Dakota Territory, including buildings at Mayville, Casselton, Lisbon, Jamestown, Pembina, Lakota and Devils Lake. Other ecclesiastical works can be found much farther afield in Montana (Anaconda and Bozeman) and in Minnesota (Marshall and Perham).

Angus Beaton was the mason who erected the church's stone walls and tower (lost in a storm and replaced with a wooden but less dramatic bell tower), so it's also worth noting that part of Hancock's 19th century preparation for a career in architecture included a period as a stone mason in his native England immediately prior to his arrival in Fargo.

Hancock maintained a wide-ranging practice in North Dakota until his death in 1924, part of it in partnership with younger brother Walter Hancock (1865-1929). He lobbied to enact the state's first architectural registration law in 1917; received North Dakota architectural license #1; and served as the first head of the new Architectural Registration Board.
