This plaza is a complex of buildings, including the current Madison Square Garden Center arena building (also known as Madison Square Gardens IV), which was constructed on the site of the 1910 Pennsylvania Station, by McKimm, Mead and White. The complex includes an office tower, known as Two Pennsylvania Plaza or Penn Station Tower, which was built directly over the subterranean Pennsylvania railway terminal, and which provides street-level entries to the terminal.
Construction of this Modern complex came following the widely opposed demolition of the 1910 station building. The organized opposition surrounding this demolition has been acknowledged as the catalyst for the modern Historic Preservation movement.
