"Designed to replace an outdated laboratory building, this complex of interconnected structures encloses a courtyard on three sides and helps create a distinct environment for the department of mechanical engineering. A dedicated laboratory facility designed for maximum flexibility houses laboratories, machine shops, and a high-bay laboratory. Across the courtyard is a building housing general university classrooms and lecture halls on the ground floor and faculty offices on the upper level. A glass-enclosed bridge at the third level spans the courtyard and connects the faculty offices with the laboratories. Completing the complex is a student-activities building that houses administrative offices, student services, and student lounges. Multiple entries to the courtyard promote its use as a gathering place and a venue for exhibiting student work. " — Chronicle of Higher Education
