Pharmacia’s new life science research building was designed to be a world-class facility for chemistry research. Designed for ultimate flexibility to respond to the company’s current and future business challenges, the mission of the building was to provide a safe, adaptable, and competitive workplace.
As a primary feature of the design, the atria encourages interaction and allows natural light to penetrate down the core of the building and permeate the interior labs through the glass walls. Offices are located adjacent to the labs, along the building’s perimeter, where natural daylight illuminates the space.
In 1998, Flad Architects utilized the project to participate in the LEED Pilot Program to beta test the new rating systems. Pharmacia’s building became the first research facility to achieve LEED certification and was awarded a LEED Gold rating in 2001.USGBC Case Study
