"An anchor and icon, Plaza Lofts 22 is the heart of new mixed-use development in Hyattsville, MD, originally planned by late modernist Edward Durell Stone. This building takes full advantage of existing site constraints while fulfilling the owner’s vision for a distinctive focal point for the new town center.
"The building’s striking form was a creative response to a structural challenge: a subterranean garage with 60-foot column spans which seemed to limit development possibilities above ground. A floor to floor truss incorporated into the building bridges the spans, dictating unique window patterns and interior volumes in the process.
"The delicate sail-like east and west facades are able to hang from this truss system to give the building its uniquely sculptural quality. Clad in zinc for the metal’s lightweight and mildly reflective properties, the sleek structure seems both anchored in its site, and ephemeral, as if about to take flight." - WDG Architecture
