Our clients approached us with a house on a corner site with essentially no back yard, but with a large side yard open to the street. Their sloping property offered no easily accessed outdoor space for this now-retired couple, so they asked for a screened porch on same floor level as their main living spaces in the house.

Our solution builds on the classic mid-Atlantic telescope house in plan and section, reaching out and up into the trees. Structurally, four steel columns support a ring of heavy timbers, which in turn carries the delicate 2x4 tracery of the walls and roof. Our clients tell us that, as much as possible, they now live in this room.
