Units 1 and 2 feature modern dormitory and apartment-style housing, providing 884 beds and filling in the streetscape while respecting the residential neighborhood of historically significant architecture. Orienting the infill buildings to the street and activating the street facades with lobby entrances, apartment patios and elevated porches, exterior staircases and apartment walkways brings life back to the street. The central open space replaces the former since-story dining halls, allowing for landscaped courtyards. 80,000 square feet of existing below-grade space was renovated to provide recreational, academic, and summer conference space. This project was designed to be the equivalent of LEED Silver. Aptly names, “Infill Student Housing”, it addresses one of the primary sustainable strategies of LEED—Urban Redevelopment.
