Robert Smythson was born in England in 1535. Although he designed a large number of innovative works during the Elizabethan era, his birth, background, education and career remain largely unknown.
The first written record to mention Smythson occurred in 1556 when he designed Sir John Thynne's home at Longleat. His success in developing an English Renaissance style for Sir Thynne gave Smythson the opportunity to design a series of country houses for other members of the nobility.
Smythson fused elements of Renaissance, Flemish, and English Gothic architecture to produce an innovative, romantic style. His son John assisted him later in his career. Smythson died in Wollaton, England in 1614.
